  • Lettuce-just a bit until fall now
  • Basil
  • Cucumbers-please enjoy this tremendous bounty, if ever there were a cucumber season, the time is now!
  • Summer Squash and Zucchini-great for fresh eating now, great to for later if you like to freeze or preserve for the dark time of year
  • Potatoes-potato salad is a great side dish for all summer time meals
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Shallots
  • Tomatoes-little sweet orange ones, red romas and early slicers, heirlooms in more abundance to come-consider a natural sun-dried method to store away some dense tomato flavor for the winter, it is a natural way to keep your veggies in the dry Tehachapi climate
  • Melons-the first few are sweetening up now, there will be many kinds to try in the coming weeks from traditional to extremely rare heirloom varieties
  • Raspberries-it is just the beginning for these sweeties, have patience if you would like some in abundance for storage, they will continue to ripen through late summer and into fall
  • Flowers-Sunflowers, asters, lisianthus, zinnia, dahlias and so much more make up fresh and unique flower bouquets. If you like to treat yourself or others to flowers this is a grand time to find something new and brilliant each week, or twice a week.

Stop by Tangleweed Farm and take some time to enjoy this bounty while it lasts! The farm has opened on Mondays for an additional option of sharing these fresh and local goods with all who can find the time to drop in.

Middle of July

Filed under:Produce in Season — EricaDM at 2:45 pm on Tuesday, July 15, 2008

  • Lettuce-maybe not as much available, the heat makes it harder to grow so prime lettuce season is about over until fall
  • Basil-it is a great time to think about stocking up for pesto or similar projects
  • Cucumbers-we have grown quite a few different varieties of cucumbers this year, hope you get a chance to try a few of each
  • Summer Squash-lots now, this is certainly in season!
  • Onions, Garlic, Shallots-a new kind of shallot ought to be available this week, it is a bit smaller like a garlic clove, but has incredible flavor, give it a try!
  • Potatoes-they will be available as soon as time permits to dig them up. Red skin and Yukon Golds will be the first available with some fingerlings to follow later on.
  • Olallieberies-there are some more out there, but the heat has really brought the season to an end. Many berries are burned and bird pecked at this point, making the hunt for a needle in a haystack even more labor intensive.
  • Sweet Peas
  • Lavender
  • Sunflowers
  • Flower Bouquets-not long until Lisianthus and Asters begin to blossom.
  • Tomatoes….not quite yet, but soon! The first little sweet orange ones are turning color down there in this year’s grand patch of tomatoes. Hang on, they are all about to be ready for at least four glorious months of fresh tomato enjoyment.

Don’t hesitate to spread this wisdom to your family, friends and others within the Tehachapi community area.

Mid-June Produce

Filed under:Produce in Season — EricaDM at 3:06 am on Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Spring is gone and summer has arrived. Crops on the farm are in transition as we harvest the last of our chard and carrots and seek out the first of our summer squash and basil. You may find a little bit of this and that as we wait for the heat to bring our early summer harvest into abundance. One thing is for sure, we have lots of onions and lots of lettuce! Please enjoy them while they are here. Lettuce only gets more difficult to grow as the summer comes on.

  • Lettuce, we are amidst salad season now
  • Cilantro or Basil
  • Maybe Swiss Chard or Spicy Mixed Greens
  • A few more carrots, beets are all gone
  • First of the season summer squash
  • New potatoes are possible, this is not yet a promise, but hope to have some by Thursday or Saturday.
  • Onions and Shallots, please forgive those that started flowering in our diverse weather. You may find a tough spot in the middle of the onion, but we will warn you and the onions still taste incredible with this minor imperfection!
  • Lavender is just poking open, there will be more and more as weeks pass
  • Flowers include Bells of Ireland with their distinct musky fragrance and vibrant and tall stems of Larkspur and some Sunflowers

We are getting calls and being asked daily and the answer is a couple of weeks still until Olallieberries will be ready. I will certainly tell you all right away!

White larkspur and flowering onion tops stand tall in the foreground while looking off toward the mountains to the south.

  • Lettuce
  • Mixed Greens
  • Cilantro
  • Swiss Chard
  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • Onions
  • Flowers-the peonies are gone for the season, the more heat this week, the more larkspur there will be to be enjoyed by all cut flower seekers out there.

Coming next will be the start of the “new” potato harvest. The plants have just started flowering meaning the time is soon to go hunting around for fresh spuds for some early potato salads. We will be harvesting beets and carrots heavily this week in order to move them along and make space to plant our winter squash crop. Please enjoy the last of the sweet root veggies this spring while they are still available. This goes for the swiss chard too.

First Week of June 2008

Filed under:Produce in Season — EricaDM at 2:17 pm on Monday, June 2, 2008
  • Lettuce-this is the time to really enjoy the lettuce while it is abundant before the real heat of summer sets in
  • Spicy mixed greens
  • Possibility of some arugula and/or spinach-both are reaching the end of their season as it warms up
  • Cilantro
  • Swiss Chard
  • Beets
  • Onions
  • End of season Peonies-this is your last chance in 2008 to enjoy this long lasting and outstanding flower blossom
  • Start of season Larkspur and Bells of Ireland are beginning to open and will be the next flowers available in abundance. Lavender is on it’s way and the first of the Sweet Peas bloomed on the last day of May.

*Looking forward to a harvest of carrots soon. They will be purple and orange and ought to be beautiful and tasty throughout this month.

*Olallieberries are also starting to set berries out there. Pretty soon farm life will be consumed with berry picking to try and meet customer demand for this sweet, seasonal treat.

Our first Sweet Pea has poked open. These fragrant little blossoms are a pleasant supplement to all the other beautiful things going on at the farm in early summer. Look forward to small bundles for sale in the coming weeks.

p5310024.jpg

If you haven’t been by in the last week or so you are missing some great fresh harvested onions. There are plenty out there in the fields so they ought to be available for some weeks to come.

p5310015.jpg

It is hard to choose a favorite peony from all the varieties we have growing here. This light pink one tends to get snatched up pretty quick though. It will be too hot for the peonies to survive much longer so when you see them for sale in the next week or two, realize it is the last chance for the season.

DON’T FORGET TO SET ASIDE SOME TIME TO DROP IN AND TAKE A STROLL AROUND THE FARM TO SEE WHAT, WHERE AND HOW THINGS ARE GROWING. THERE IS SO MUCH GOING ON RIGHT NOW AND IT IS A DELIGHT TO OBSERVE THE FARM AS IT EVOLVES THROUGHOUT OUR RELATIVELY BRIEF GROWING SEASON HERE IN TEHACHAPI.

For the Month of May, 2008

Filed under:Produce in Season — EricaDM at 2:36 am on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Arugula
  • Mixed Greens
  • Swiss Chard
  • Beets
  • Iris, Peonies, maybe some early larkspur

This ought to be what is available for the next couple of weeks. Upcoming produce to look forward to includes carrots, summer squash, maybe cilantro, and eventually basil. All of this is at least a couple of weeks down the road depending on how much heat we get to nudge things along. While it is exciting to look forward to the summer crops, it is also a pleasure to indulge in the spring veggies that are now upon us. The month of May at the farm really revolves around the peony harvest which is still headed our way. Mother’s Day turned out to be a little too early this year with the weather we were given. There will be an abundance of this spectacle of a flower in the next week or two and throughout the month of May.
